敦厚乐观的中年农民鞠广大（范明 饰），是中国千百万农民工中的一员。为了改善生活，为了让儿子专心读书出人头地，他在外勤勤恳恳，任劳任怨。虽然攒下不少钱，但其中的辛酸几人能知？ 广大的儿子双元（陈思成 饰）三年高考，三年落第。情知进城打工辛苦的广大严厉禁止儿子走上这条辛苦道路，然而对学业失望的双元终于偷偷踏上开往县城的列车。外面的花花世界令始终握在乡间的双元不知所措，他偶然帮助了一个被人殴打的男人老臧，为表谢意，老臧将双元介绍进某工地。正所谓无巧不成书，广大也在这个工地打工。父子为打工问题发生争吵，甚至断绝关系。不久，双元邂逅同样来自农村女子李平（潘雨辰 饰）。拥有不幸爱情经历的李平和对爱情充满憧憬的双元慢慢走到一起，但再美好的爱情也要面临残酷现实的考验……
